Thank you for the music!

I have had a very enjoyable year writing this blog and my other ones. If the truth be known, I mainly write these days because I enjoy it and because I hope the odd nugget might be useful.

I suppose I started blogging partly to raise my profile, and for the Google effect; as a marketing tool. I soon found that I enjoyed writing, unexpectedly it was good for my ego to have a voice. I also find it useful in my general thought process and even relaxing. Although the marketing matters to me, a very welcome side effect is the therapeutic value is in crystallising my thought and getting new ideas. Seth Godin has written about this.

I have learned a huge amount from others and I am sure there is a lot more to discover. We can never know enough about anything which excites us. Apart from Seth, there are others who have helped me a great deal, whether they know it or not, although I know they all set out to help. That’s what good bloggers do; it is not about selling, though any business which comes along is very welcome. I hope I am helping too.

It is difficult knowing whom to thank because some deserving people will be left out. If you feel left out, don’t worry because I do appreciate you. So aside from thanking my wife, my family, my agent and our cats I wish to pay tribute to those from whom I have learned:

Move with the times!

I was writing the other day about the business directories not really delivering for many small businesses. One of the reason for that is that our customer and clients tend to look elsewhere for their services. Compared with even five years ago, so many more people search on-line for the stuff they want, whether it is for a chimney sweep (yes, we employ one) or for an EBay offering or for a courier service or an accountant. There is always the possibility that even the on-line searchers will go with a recommendation but we have to be alive to the need to be found on-line when someone looks.

We were talking about this at a breakfast meeting, when our resident SEO expert commented how the search engines change their game all the time and he has to be on top of it as far as possible. This then brought us on to the changes even with Twitter and two of us who subscribe to Jim Connolly’s Marketing Blog remembered Jim’s comment concerning the person who wrote a paperback about Twitter which was bound to be instantly out-of-date. Incidentally I recommend you subscribe to Jim’s blog which is excellent. He is a top marketer.

It is most important to keep up with what is going on now. Traditional sales and marketing in print was indeed traditional for two hundred years or more, but now we all need to think on our feet and indeed listen to the buzz of the internet. Otherwise the business world will leave us trailing behind, and that means all of us including the dress shop and the hardware store.

Why quality is important – lessons from BMW and Waitrose

I had a strange dream last night. I had been asked to work at a trade exhibition selling BMW cars. Quite why I am not sure as I am no salesman, but I was asked how I would approach this task, to which I responded that all cars have a wheel more or less at each corner and for the most part were a simple mode of transport. So I said I would concentrate on the enjoyment and wonderful experience of driving a BMW, and of course their reliability, making them better cars and better performers than the rest. That of course is the BMW approach to marketing, and whilst I do not have one of their cars, clearly my subconscious as been imbued with their philosophy.

Some people I know, both clients and family, have been let down recently by people they trusted, and in all cases this has been because they were engaging amateurs and people not up to the task. I have mentioned previously that it is no good employing anyone to provide services to your business who is not a full time professional in their area. Part-timers and co-opted amateurs will not be up to the job and indeed it is not fair to ask them to do it in the first place, because it will all end in tears; ours and those who have failed us, and there will be bad blood.

What I have been thinking about is that we need to engage trusted and recommended people to support our businesses, and we need to be the best in our field at what we do. We need to be different from the rest, to have something special as far as our prospects are concerned so that they want to be our clients. We need to be the Waitrose experience, top quality products and services for which we can charge a decent amount and have our clients or customers and clients come back to us again and again. Jim Connolly would explain it better actually, so why not ask him?

In this difficult market it has been hard to avoid grabbing at every piece of business even where the reward is not great. I have done my best in the last couple of years because it is no good working hard without proper profit. I already provide a quality service. I am going to try even harder to live up to the philosophy of providing perceived quality in the coming years. What about you? What do you think?
